I know the Egyptians often put lots of these little blue figures in and around burials, but beyond that I am rather ignorant of exactly what they were for. Does it matter though? There's a great range of shapes and expressions here, and colours ranging from indigo through copper sulphate to a pale verdigris green. Did Anthony Gormley know about these when he set about creating his excellent ranks of teracotta figures?
