Take classical nudity and transpose it to a modern 19th Century setting and what have you got? Outraged Parisiennes apparently. 150 years old but there's still something modern and pop-art about Manet's picture. And the wonderful parody (homage?) by Bow Wow Wow who copied it for the cover of their first album, with Annabella Lwin (Bow Wow Wow's singer) modelling nude. Her mum caused a stink because Annabella was underage at the time, but this only adds to the racy quality of the original picture. I heard that Sophia Coppola modelled Marie Antoinette on Annabella so, weirdly, ground breaking 19th Century art becomes the basis for controversial 1980s pop album cover, which in turn influences a 21st Century film about pre revolution French aristocracy.
